I Am Young and Gay
05.07.05 (11:21 pm)   [edit]

oscar wilde, talented author (period)

“I am young and gay

I used to tell my Mummy Dear

Those were the good ole days,

When no one will think me queer;

Speaking of “queer” I remembered too,

That was how I addressed odd Mr. Lawrence,

His face will turn red at me, like he always do,

But he’ll never think that I doubted his sexual preference.

When I slogged through my Latin syllabus,

Half asleep, I heard the old Master said,

“unus et mediator Dei et hominum homo Christus Iesus”

Lousy as we were in Latin, no one would suspect that Jesus was not straight.

Funny these days how some words were used,

Out came from the closet, new language rules,

If you set fire on faggots, it was a most natural deed,

but now even if you write a poem like this, you’re intolerant, a witch-hunter or even a witch.

"No civilised man ever regrets a pleasure, just as no uncivilised man ever knows what a pleasure is."- Oscar Wilde....

Well Mr. civillised Oscar Wilde did seem to show regret for his life of pleasure in Dorian Gray. And I think that quote is so stupid - so many people in the world have their lives destroyed by harmful pleasure. Pleasure was given by God, but mankind twist it into pervertion, steal it and make it illicit, and trample it underfoot as they march in the streets rallying for a world free from the moral laws of God.

Rather dissappointing as i do find Oscar Wilde a literary humuorous fellow.
Sigh, those whom i hope to learn from or at least pick from are always distorted in some manner,

thus I have chosen to pick from that which is perfect and supreme....God!

The reason i wrote this poem was, i think rather obviously, to spur some discussion on the usage of words through time and culture. But it seemed Oscar Wilde got the better coverage. :D

FYI, Aronil, I was amused by the discussion on your blog about this issue of language.

I found Popper in some sense echoed well with Dr. NKW's lecturer last week on how we ought not to built our doctrines based on words, i.e. incessantly fixing the majority meaning of the word found throughout the bible to an individual passage where the word appear. Any opinion? Leon, I am sure you can give us some of your thoughts here.

Well I would agree with NKW, but I would put it this way, in hermeneutics, we must take words in their context, yet, as a good reformed guy, I put a greater premium on the precise words God chooses to use especially in the epistles, where they can change the application of an entire sentence (which is why I don’t like translations like the NIV). Having said that though, I have always has a suspicion of Charismatics building doctrines from a single word (like the Rhema word). The best solution to these times, is switch to the ESV. This message has been brought to you by the “Essentially Literal” ESV folks.
