Jesus was the focal turning point for the real, redeemed, returned exile of Israel. But it was not what Israel expected to be. Jesus went to Jerusalem, but in his mind; was a different battle altogether. It is not with military battles, but to turn the other cheek and going the second mile. It was his longing to take the judgment himself for the sake of Israel and he exercised that longing. In other words, he would be Israel for Israel. I listened to Wright's Romans in a week, and I found nothing special, and some contraversial. Try listening to RC Sproul's "from dust to glory" - that is good stuff. posted by: Datist (reply) post date: 06.30.05 (4:19 am) mah lei, who is blogging like nobody's business here! posted by: Joan-Lynn (reply) post date: 07.01.05 (1:12 am) Hello Bro. It's pretty surprising how I dropped in JUST yesterday itself, wanted to say 'hi' to keep in touch, cos I haven't talked to you for ages, but coming in here, and looking at all those 'deep-thinking entries' along with those 'deep-thinking comments', I guess it scared me off to leave any 'casual' comment like what I'm doing now. Plus, you don't have any 'tagboard' or sort for me to 'spam'. Wait, even if you have one, that tagboard might probably be filled with those 'deep-thinking tags' as well. Which in the end might scare me off without leaving any 'msg' again. Haha. Anyway, coincidentally how I drop by yesterday, and then you left a message on my comment box instead. All of a sudden. It's as though I left something here, and you came to reply it. But coming in here, I'm reminded I didn't leave any message. :) So it's real coincidence. Looking forward to catch up with you one day again. Take care. Blog on! posted by: DAtist (reply) post date: 07.05.05 (3:40 am) "Jesus claimed that his mission was to do what Israel was meant to do but failed..." Can you specific distinctly between your understanding of the (1)missions between Jesus and Israel, (2) How did Jesus see Israel's mission, (3) How did Israel see the mission of the coming messiah? (4) was Israel's failure justified? (5) was Jesus's triumph justified (this last question depend heavilly on your answer to the first question)? I think this is some of the important issues that need clarification before any further attempt posted by: jacksaid (reply) post date: 07.05.05 (3:43 am) Datist; i have already answered u in msn, now i have no time to entertain u for the second time. But for other readers, pls wait for me reply, soon posted by: jacksaid (reply) post date: 07.09.05 (12:45 am) Reply to: DAtist First of all, i wanna acknowledge that like many of my posts, i have taken for granted and have excluded what I thought to be presupposed information. What you have asked, i assumed that my readers would immediately call to mind from readings of OT... Let me first attempt to answer question 1, what I understand of Israel's mission and the Messiah's (Jesus') mission: In a nutshell, Israel was called to be: 1)Servant of YHWH, to obey his law, to serve him only- to live out the real humanity (alot of Isaiah passages, esp. Is 49:3- of course many say it's refering to Jesus, but if taken on it's first level, the verse must refer to Israel, the ppl of God, in conjunction with passages before and after this verse) 2)To reconcile the world to YHWH, to point to the nations (gentiles) the glory of YHWH the one true God and attract them to Zion to learn the Torah. (This is espcially true of the abrahamic promise that tru Abe's family the nations will be blessed, i see this as the blessing of salvation/redemption/i.e. reconcilliation of the world to God. Examples, the cases of Rahab, who feared YHWH because of what he has done to Israel) 3)To pronounce judgment on the nations (gentiles) for their godlessness, their idolatry and their unrighteousness (basically as Israel is called to obey the One true God, they are sending the msg to the world that, "hey, my God is the true God, your gods are but useless idols". This is the judgement/criticism of Israel to the nations. They are to pronounce and declare that YHWH will judge their corruption. In fact by their very act of submission to YHWH, Israel is daily heaping coals to idolatrous nations) Would you disagree if I say that the Messiah (capital M) is destined to play this role? Yet Israel was also called to do it in advance, in anticipation of the true Israelite, the real Messiah. But of course, whle i already cancel out the "messiah" as in kings and prophets to say that israel was the messiah in the likes of the Messiah, i m not saying that israel was called to "SAVE" the nation in the sense of the "atonment" that we understand as Christian in Jesus' death. Of course, how could they? What I meant was, Israel was called to be a covenant/promise establishing shadow-of-a-Messiah who will bring ppl back to God, not of a sin-atoning Messiah. I never rule out that the Suffering Servant in Isaiah 52/53 is a special office which was to be that of the Davidic root, becoming both the Messiah of Israel and of the world. In this case, see Israel as both the beneficiaries of the blessings of YHWH and the dispenser of the blessings to the nations, while Gentiles, the world at large, is the beneficiaries of the blessings of YHWH, but never the dispenser until the Church, who was called the spiritual Israel. hope that helps for your first question. later~~~ |
